How The Extension Heals Families: Jesse Gray’s Story
“If you had told me last year that I would be here right now, I never would have believed you.”
In 2021, Jesse Gray lived in Houston, Texas. He couldn’t hold a job, was shooting up heroin, and had just lost custody of this son and daughter to his ex-wife, Trisha, who had become sober through The Extension.
Trisha had tried to persuade Jesse to become sober, knowing she could help get him into The Extension if he wanted to change. But he refused, assuming that she was still high as well.
For his son Trent’s 15th birthday, his kids were able to come visit Jesse in Houston. When they arrived, Jesse put his kids up in a motel room because he didn’t have anywhere else for them to stay with him. On the day before Trent’s birthday, Jesse left before his kids woke up to go shoot up heroin. He thought that if he returned before they woke up, he would be feeling great, and his son would have good, memorable birthday with his dad.
Jesse didn’t intend to be caught with heroin by the police while he was out and being locked up before he was able to get back to his kids.
When Trisha and her boyfriend, James, who was also an alum of The Extension, found out about the situation, they started the 11-hour drive across 3 states to get the kids. While Jesse was in jail, Trisha and her boyfriend were talking to the kids. James told Trent, “I want you to know that you and your sister are great kids, and I love y’all. Don’t hate your dad, because he’s a good man. I know he’s a good man and he loves y’all a lot.”
Jesse had never met James, and yet, here was a man who had been through addiction and was now in recovery, going to bat for Jesse and trying to protect his relationship with his son. Because he was in jail, Jesse was a few days clean and experiencing withdrawal. It was then and there that Jesse was moved.
Moved by the power of love and grace that brought them all that way, not just to care for the children but to truly shine a light on the opportunity for a better life, Jesse was willing to see if The Extension could work for him too.
Jesse entered The Extension, and through hard work and encouragement from everyone around him, he began to heal. Jesse says his relationships with his kids, his ex, and his parents all improved throughout his time at The Extension. Although Jesse knows that it’s best not to be in control of everything, he has taken back his life.
Today, Jesse has never been happier, never had a better job, and never been on better terms with those he loves, and he’s excited about the future. Jesse says that one of the most important tools that The Extension taught him was how to live life on life’s terms, and that it’s better to let God handle things, rather than try to do it all yourself.
But the best thing that The Extension gave Jesse is the people. He credits the people who went before him and shown him what a sober life could look like, who surrounded him, uplifted him, and encouraged him. Without these people, he is not sure that recovery would be possible or worth it.
This year, when Trent turned 16, Jesse was there. He was able to celebrate his son with family and friends, free from jail and free from addiction.
